Civil Engineering Students Gain Field Exposure at Brick Manufacturing Unit

Kanpur, April 1, 2026 – The Department of Civil Engineering organized an industrial visit to a brick manufacturing unit for B.Tech students, aimed at reinforcing theoretical knowledge with practical insight.

During the visit, students observed the complete manufacturing process, from clay preparation and moulding to drying, burning, and storage. Faculty members provided step-by-step explanations, with particular emphasis on the burning stage, kiln operation, temperature regulation, and fuel efficiency.

Students were introduced to brick classification and quality evaluation. They examined specimens of first, second, third class, and jhama bricks, learning to differentiate them based on color, dimensions, sound, and surface texture. Field tests, including water absorption, hardness, and soundness tests, were demonstrated to assess brick quality as per standard practices.

The session also covered critical precautions in manufacturing, common defects such as bloating, chuffs, laminations, and cracks, and preventive measures. Students learned how variables like clay composition, moulding method, drying time, and firing temperature directly influence the strength and durability of the final product.

Assistant Professors Sikander Kumar, Yasveer Yadav, and Shreya Tiwari accompanied the students and shared technical inputs throughout the visit. Students described the experience as highly informative, stating that observing processes on site helps translate classroom concepts into clear understanding.

Commending the students for their discipline, Head of Department (Civil) Md Shariq highlighted the importance of industrial visits in developing practical competence. He reiterated the department’s commitment to organizing regular field visits and industry interactions to enhance students’ technical skills and prepare them for professional challenges.
