Educational Tour of Chandigarh and Shimla The Department of Civil Engineering at Axis Colleges planned a very instructive four-day trip to Chandigarh and Shimla. The goal was to help students learn more about urban planning, structural design, and historic architecture in both theory and practice. The journey was meticulously planned to give students a well-rounded educational experience by combining technical study with cultural exposure.
Chandigarh was one of India’s best-planned cities, therefore it was a great place for students to learn about modern town planning and urban development. Students looked at the city’s well-planned layout, large road networks, and green belts, all of which were built by the famous architect Le Corbusier. Students were able to study structural elements, spatial design, symmetry, and sustainable planning ideas by visiting important architectural sites such the Open Hand Monument, the Secretariat Building, the High Court of Justice, and the Palace of Assembly.
The journey also included a stop at the famous Rock Garden of Chandigarh, where students learned about how landscape architects creatively reused industrial and household waste materials, which reinforced the theme of sustainability in design and construction.
As they made their way into the hills, the students reached Shimla, where they saw important historical and architectural landmarks including the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, which is a great example of British colonial architecture. The visit taught us about how to make buildings last longer, how to design buildings that work well in different climates, and how to protect our cultural heritage. The Jakhu Temple and The Ridge were two other important places to visit in Shimla. There, students could see how well the natural landscape and city growth work together.
During the tour, teachers helped students look at how buildings are built, how zoning laws work, and how public spaces are used in both cities and hills. The instructional tour not only added to what students learned in class, but it also helped them understand better how civil engineering shapes settings that are functional, beautiful, and long-lasting.
At Axis Colleges, we think that learning should go beyond reading books. This educational trip to Chandigarh and Shimla shows how dedicated we are to giving Civil Engineering students real-world experience, critical thinking skills, and hands-on information that will help them deal with the problems of building modern infrastructure.Â
