Market Survey of Interior Furniture

Diploma interior design students explore shop offices and service spaces through detailed market survey and furniture measurement study

Students from the Diploma in Interior Design program, including first-year and second-year batches, recently undertook an educational market survey to Z square Mall as part of their academic curriculum. The visit focused on understanding the design, planning, and functional aspects of shop offices and service-based spaces, providing students with valuable real-world exposure beyond the classroom.

The survey was organized to help students bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. During the visit, students closely observed various commercial interiors, including retail shops, office setups, and service-oriented establishments. Their primary objective was to analyze spatial arrangements, furniture layouts, circulation patterns, and overall design schemes used in these environments.

A key component of the survey involved taking detailed measurements of furniture elements relevant to their assigned topics. Students carefully documented dimensions of workstations, display units, storage systems, counters, and seating arrangements. This hands-on activity enabled them to understand ergonomic considerations, standard sizing, and the relationship between furniture and available space.

In addition to measurements, students also studied the materials, finishes, and design aesthetics used in different settings. They observed how lighting, color schemes, and furniture placement contribute to the functionality and visual appeal of interiors. The exposure allowed them to critically evaluate design solutions and understand how different elements come together to create efficient and user-friendly spaces.

Faculty members guided the students throughout the survey, encouraging them to ask questions, interact with shop owners or staff, and note practical challenges faced in real-world scenarios. This interactive approach helped students gain deeper insights into client requirements, budget considerations, and the importance of adaptability in design.

The market survey proved to be a highly enriching experience, enhancing students’ observational, analytical, and documentation skills. It also encouraged teamwork and active participation, as students worked in groups to collect and compile data.

Such field-based learning activities play a crucial role in shaping future designers by exposing them to real-life contexts and professional practices. The experience gained from this survey will support students in developing more informed and practical design solutions in their future academic projects.
