Urban Design Jury

The Urban Design Final Internal Jury for the Bachelor of Architecture Fourth Year students of AIA

Axis Institute of Architecture, Kanpur, successfully conducted internal Jury with an elaborate presentation on the redevelopment of the Jhakarkatti area, one of the most significant transit and commercial hubs of the city.

The academic exercise aimed to develop a comprehensive understanding of the existing urban fabric and propose sustainable redevelopment solutions for the area through detailed research and design intervention.

The students carried out an in-depth study of the existing condition of the site, including land use analysis, circulation patterns, transportation networks, pedestrian movement, commercial activities, public amenities, environmental concerns, and socio-economic aspects.

Extensive site surveys, documentation, mapping exercises, and interaction with local residents and users formed an important part of the study process.

The evaluation highlighted major urban challenges such as traffic congestion, unorganized commercial growth, lack of pedestrian-friendly spaces, inadequate infrastructure, parking issues, and poor public realm conditions in the Jhakarkatti precinct.

Based on the analysis, the students proposed innovative redevelopment plans focusing on improving the overall urban experience while maintaining the identity and functional importance of the area.

The proposals included concepts related to mixed-use development, improved traffic circulation, organized vending zones, enhanced public spaces, green pockets, transit-oriented planning, better parking management, and pedestrian-friendly streetscapes.

Several projects also emphasized sustainable urban strategies such as environmental improvement, urban greens, efficient public transport integration, and smart infrastructure development.

The jury showcased the students’ ability to critically analyze complex urban issues and respond with practical as well as visionary planning solutions. Detailed drawings, zoning plans, urban design frameworks, visual illustrations, and conceptual models were presented during the evaluation process.

The presentation reflected a strong understanding of urban design principles and the importance of people-centric development in rapidly growing cities like Kanpur.

The projects were undertaken under the supervision of the Director of Axis Institute of Architecture, Dr. Rishi Raj Kapoor, whose continuous encouragement motivated students to explore contemporary urban design approaches.

The students also received valuable guidance from Ar. Vanshika Agarwal and other faculty members of AIA throughout the project duration.

The jury panel appreciated the analytical depth, creativity, and contextual sensitivity demonstrated by the students in addressing the redevelopment potential of the Jhakarkatti area.

The session concluded with detailed feedback and discussions, encouraging students to further strengthen their proposals through the integration of smart city concepts, sustainable mobility systems, inclusive public spaces, and resilient urban infrastructure for the future development of Kanpur.
