Civil Engineering Students Visit Hillways RMC Plant

Kanpur: To bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical industrial knowledge, students of the 3rd and 4th years of the Civil Engineering Department of Axis Institute of Technology and Management, Axis Colleges, participated in an industrial visit to the Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC) Plant of Hillways Construction Company Private Limited. The visit provided students with valuable insights into modern concrete production techniques, construction materials, plant operations, and quality control practices followed in the construction industry.

During the visit, students explored the functioning of the RMC plant and observed the various machines and equipment used in the production of ready-mix concrete. They learned about the different stages involved in concrete production, including the storage of raw materials, batching of cement and aggregates, measurement of water, mixing of concrete, and transportation of fresh concrete to construction sites through transit mixers. The students also gained an understanding of the role of batching plants, aggregate storage systems, cement silos, conveyor belts, and concrete mixing units in ensuring efficient and consistent production.

The technical team explained the importance of maintaining the correct water-cement ratio, accurate proportioning of ingredients, proper mixing, and quality control in producing concrete that meets the required specifications. Students also learned about the significance of workability, the slump test, and the need for timely transportation and placement of concrete at construction sites. The visit helped them understand how mechanised concrete production improves uniformity, saves time, reduces material wastage, and enhances the efficiency of large-scale construction projects.

Throughout the visit, Yashveer Yadav and Sikander Kumar, the visit coordinators, accompanied the students and guided them during the industrial learning experience. Their support helped students connect theoretical concepts studied in the classroom with actual industrial practices and understand the practical challenges involved in concrete production and construction management.

Following the visit, Md Shariq, Head of the Civil Engineering Department, highlighted the importance of industrial exposure in the professional development of future civil engineers. He explained that such visits help students understand the practical applications of concrete technology, construction materials, quality assurance, and modern construction methods. He further emphasised that knowledge of RMC plant operations would be beneficial for students in their future careers in site engineering, quality control, construction supervision, project management, and infrastructure development.

The visit proved to be an enriching learning experience, encouraging students to develop technical understanding, professional awareness, and industry-oriented skills. By observing real-time plant operations and interacting with industrial practices, the students gained valuable knowledge beyond textbooks and strengthened their understanding of the essential role of concrete technology in modern civil engineering.

Axis Colleges continues to encourage experiential learning and industry interaction to prepare students for the evolving demands of the construction sector and to nurture competent, skilled, and industry-ready civil engineers.
