Architecture Urban Design Jury Completed Fourth-Year B.Arch. Students Successfully Complete
Urban Design External Jury at Axis Institute of ArchitectureKanpur, June 2026: The Department of Architecture at Axis Institute of Architecture, Axis Colleges, successfully conducted the External Jury for the Urban Design Studio of the Fourth-Year Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) students.
The jury marked the culmination of an extensive semester-long urban design exercise focused on the Jharkati Bus Terminal precinct and its surrounding urban fabric in Kanpur, one of the city’s most significant transportation and commercial hubs.
Under the guidance of Ar. Vanshika Agarwal, the students undertook a comprehensive study of the selected urban stretch, aiming to understand and address the complex challenges faced by the area.
The project required students to analyze the existing urban conditions through detailed surveys, field visits, mapping exercises, stakeholder interactions, and case study investigations.
The students began by conducting in-depth analyses of land use patterns, traffic circulation, pedestrian movement, public transportation systems, open spaces, infrastructure networks, and socio-economic activities.
They identified key urban issues such as traffic congestion, inadequate pedestrian facilities, poor public realm quality, unorganized commercial activities, lack of green spaces, inefficient parking management, and challenges related to accessibility and wayfinding.
Based on their findings, students developed urban design proposals that sought to transform the area into a more organized, efficient, sustainable, and people-centric urban environment. Their proposals focused on improving mobility networks, enhancing pedestrian experiences, integrating public spaces, strengthening transportation connectivity, and creating vibrant urban nodes that respond to the needs of residents, commuters, and businesses alike.
During the external jury, students presented their complete design process through analytical maps, zoning plans, circulation studies, SWOT analyses, urban design frameworks, conceptual diagrams, master plans, street sections, visualizations, and three-dimensional representations.
They effectively demonstrated how data-driven analysis informed their design decisions and how their proposed interventions addressed the identified urban challenges. The external jurors appreciated the students’ systematic approach toward understanding urban complexities and their ability to translate research into practical and innovative design solutions.
The jury sessions witnessed engaging discussions on urban resilience, public space design, sustainable mobility, transit-oriented development, and the future growth potential of the Jharkati precinct.Faculty members congratulated the students on their dedication and commitment throughout the semester.
They highlighted that the studio provided valuable exposure to real-world urban challenges and encouraged students to think critically about the role of architects and urban designers in shaping better cities.Speaking on the occasion, Ar. Vanshika Agarwal commended the students for their hard work, analytical rigor, and creative problem-solving abilities. She emphasized the importance of contextual and user-focused urban interventions in creating sustainable and inclusive urban environments.
The successful completion of the Urban Design External Jury stands as a testament to the academic excellence and design-oriented learning culture fostered at Axis Institute of Architecture, preparing students to contribute meaningfully to the future of urban development and city planning.
