The Department of Axis Institute of Architecture, Axis Colleges, organized an educational site visit to Balaji Temple, Kanpur, for the second-year students of the Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) program as part of the Studio of Architecture curriculum. The visit was planned to provide students with practical exposure to the principles of Hindu Temple Architecture, enabling them to connect classroom learning with real-world architectural experiences.
The academic excursion was encouraged by the Director of Axis Institute of Architecture, Dr. Rishi Raj Kapoor, who consistently promotes experiential learning as an integral part of architectural education. The visit offered students an excellent opportunity to study the temple’s architectural style, spatial planning, construction techniques, and cultural significance through direct observation.
During the visit, students carefully examined both the interior and exterior of the temple, documenting architectural details through freehand sketches and measured drawings. They analyzed the temple’s proportions, structural elements, and ornamental features while gaining a deeper understanding of the planning principles and design philosophy of traditional Hindu temple architecture. Students also observed areas affected by weathering and minor structural deterioration, helping them understand the importance of architectural documentation, conservation, and heritage preservation.
A key learning activity involved studying the textures and materials used in the temple’s construction. Students closely observed and physically explored the surface textures of stone and other building materials before recreating them through detailed texture sketches. This tactile learning exercise enhanced their understanding of material properties, construction techniques, and architectural representation.
