B.Arch Students Gain First-Hand Exposure to Awadh Architecture Through History of Architecture Visit
The Axis Institute of Architecture, AXIS Colleges, organised an insightful educational visit to Lucknow for the students of the Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) programme as part of their academic learning in History of Architecture.
The visit provided students with an opportunity to step beyond the classroom and experience the rich architectural heritage and cultural identity of the Awadh region first-hand.
During the visit, students explored significant architectural spaces and gained a deeper understanding of the distinctive characteristics of Awadh architecture. They observed various architectural elements, including intricate ornamentation, arches, domes, courtyards, decorative details, spatial compositions, materials, and traditional craftsmanship.
The students were encouraged to closely analyse how architectural forms evolved in response to the region’s cultural influences, historical context, climate, construction techniques, and social practices.
The visit served as an effective extension of classroom-based learning, allowing students to connect theoretical concepts from the History of Architecture curriculum with real architectural examples.
Through direct observation and documentation, students developed a better understanding of scale, proportion, materials, construction details, aesthetics, and the relationship between architecture and its historical context.
The educational initiative was actively encouraged by Ar. Abhijeet Pratap Singh, Head of Department, Axis Institute of Architecture, who consistently motivates students to engage in experiential learning and explore architecture beyond textbooks. His encouragement played an important role in providing students with opportunities to understand architectural history through direct exposure to heritage structures and culturally significant spaces.
The visit also encouraged students to appreciate the importance of preserving architectural heritage and understanding traditional design principles in contemporary architectural practice.
Experiencing the built environment in its actual context enabled students to develop a more informed perspective on how history, culture, craftsmanship, and architecture are interconnected.
