Corset-Making Workshop at Axis Colleges: A Hands-On Fashion Craft Experience 👗✂️
Axis Colleges proudly organized a specialized Corset-Making Workshop for its fashion design students, under the expert guidance of Mr. Satyam Bharti, Assistant Professor in the Department of Fashion. This immersive workshop was designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, offering students a valuable opportunity to explore the art and precision of corsetry—a fundamental skill in the world of structured garment design.
The workshop commenced with an in-depth session on body measurements and their translation into patterns. Students were introduced to the importance of accurate measurement techniques, learning how each measurement directly influences garment structure and fit. They were taught to visualize how the body’s contours are shaped and altered through strategic pattern design, laying the groundwork for more advanced tailoring skills.
The highlight of the session was the construction of the classic Eight-Panel Corset. Students first observed the drafting of the pattern on paper, then progressed to drafting their own based on standard and customized measurements. Following this, each student created a calico mockup—a rough version of the corset—allowing them to analyze the fit, make necessary adjustments, and understand the intricacies of garment shaping and structural balance.
Once the mockups were refined, the students integrated the necessary alterations into their master patterns, ensuring precision before moving on to the final production phase. The culmination of the workshop involved students crafting their bespoke corsets using premium corsetry materials such as steel boning, quality interfacing, and elegant fashion fabrics. This phase emphasized craftsmanship, detail orientation, and design personalization.
This hands-on experience not only enriched students’ technical skills but also deepened their understanding of fashion construction and historical garment techniques. By the end of the workshop, participants walked away with beautifully constructed corsets and a profound sense of confidence in their pattern-making and sewing abilities.
