Fashion Sustainability – AIFT Axis Colleges Hosts Insightful Guest Lecture on Fashion Sustainability by Mr. Suneel Kushwaha
Axis Colleges recently organized a thought-provoking guest lecture on Fashion Sustainability for its fashion students, inviting Mr. Suneel Kushwaha—a distinguished Indian Textile Designer from the National Institute of Design (NID) and currently serving as Craft and Livelihood Manager at the Mijwan Welfare Society.
The session was an eye-opener, offering students a deeper understanding of the environmental and social impacts of the fashion industry, which is notably the second-largest polluting industry in the world. Mr. Kushwaha’s insights encouraged the budding designers to think beyond aesthetics and trend cycles and consider their role in shaping a more eco-conscious and ethical fashion future.
During the lecture, Mr. Kushwaha shared his remarkable journey—an inspiring blend of artistic passion, educational expertise, and social responsibility. His work in empowering artisans through sustainable textile practices highlighted the importance of craft preservation and ethical sourcing, encouraging students to see fashion not only as an art form but also as a vehicle for positive societal change.
He elaborated on key components of fashion sustainability, including reducing textile waste, using natural dyes and eco-friendly materials, conserving water and energy, and ensuring fair labor practices throughout the supply chain. The students were also introduced to circular fashion models, slow fashion concepts, and innovative approaches to sustainable design that are transforming the global fashion landscape.
The lecture urged students to make more responsible choices as future fashion professionals—to embrace and support brands that prioritize sustainability and ethics. Mr. Kushwaha emphasized that sustainable fashion is not just a trend but a necessary shift in mindset and practice, vital for the well-being of the planet and its people.
Axis Colleges continues to bring such enriching sessions to the campus, fostering conscious creativity and responsible innovation. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, where students enthusiastically discussed their ideas and gained practical advice on implementing sustainable practices in their future work.
As we move forward, let us all pledge to make fashion choices that are not only stylish but also sustainable and kind to the Earth. Together, we can stitch the fabric of a greener, cleaner future.
